Electric toothbrushes and fringe

I recently almost spent a ridiculous amount of money for a vintage coat online but was saved at the last minute by an email from Sheila of Ephemera. Buying it would have gone against my golden rule of thrifting: go with the flow and make sure you check out the five-dollar rack. Still, I wonder if that coat is gone. I'll just have a little peek…

But I'm more than happy with my new upcycled shaggy jacket.
I bought an oversized off-white shaggy jacket for $15 recognizing its Hideous-With-Potential Value (HWPV). I enhanced it with fabric paint, which maintains its softness, and Sharpie markers. I don't think the painting is done yet but I wore the jacket out anyway. The button at the bottom needs to be realigned to shrink the size in a cheating fashion, but in a pinch I grabbed a single suspender clip from my odds-and-ends drawer (I use them for emergencies of all sorts) to snap the front together. It worked a treat.
I wore this with my embroidered wrecked-up oversized jeans, scribbled-on Converse sneakers, Middle-Aged Kitteh DIY T-shirt, silk scarf, and magic loupe. Crowds parted on the sidewalk to let this MAT (middle-aged tweener) through. Grrr.
We disconnected our TV. There have been so few shows O and I enjoy, apart from the building's entertaining security channel, that cable was a waste of money. Suffering from withdrawal I ate two protein bars in a row to make myself feel good. Then I felt bad because they were the excruciatingly nutritious chocolate chip protein bars.

Finding succour in chocolate has meant more quality time with my appliance – no! you dirty-minded trollops, I speak of another wand – my electric toothbrush. To clarify: for brushing teeth! In my mouth!! It boasts a separate digital smiley face counter that acquires more facial features the longer you brush. I've been wondering what it looks like if I brush for five minutes instead of the standard two but I max out at four when the paste goes watery and I start to gag. For that I am rewarded with a smirking smiley face with twitchy eyebrows, as if to say, you idiot, what did you expect?

Did you know there are WiFi power toothbrushes now? Imagine if you're at an executive meeting and your phone tinkles: "Sweet Mel, time to brush your teeth! Healthy gums, healthy mind!" Won't happen – I'm the sole attendant at my executive meetings, in which case the only thing that would embarrass me is having a transcript of my unhealthy mind leaked to the press, kind of like what I'm doing here in this blog.

I'm linking this up to Sacramento's Share-in-Style at Mis Papelicos.
Electric toothbrushes, yay or nay? I love mine, but not for four minutes!

  1. That "shaggy jacket" is probably designed by Jackson Pollock and I'm looking forward to see the coat.

  2. I am truly afraid of your intelli-brush. A girl needs just a few private moments, yeah? The coat is brilliant, another Mel work of art. xox

  3. You are getting quite a collection of shaggy coats.

I couldn't disconnect my TV. I enjoy watching way too many shows.

  4. Ohhhhh the jacket. Your color enhancements are divine. No wonder the crowds parted on the sidewalk in homage to your beauty and artistic flair. I am doing the same from afar!

  5. Another gorgeous creation by Mel. Love what you did to that jacket.
Are you sure you didn't take your electric toothbrush to that too?

  6. I am learning some new acronyms and loving it: HWPV and MAT are now on my radar. DMT (dirty-minded trollop)? Love the coat. Don't love electric toothbrushes because the only buzz I want in my skull should not be electric.

  7. Yay! I get to start my day with a Melanie-induced smile - and I get to brush my teeth with my electric toothbrush. Alas, no smiley face - and no cable for us either - but I can make faces at myself in the mirror, as if I'm a monkey in a cage.

Love the colorful shaggy coat! It sets this one apart from alllllll the other shaggy coats. And I love to see you in jeans! It makes you look mortal, like the rest of us.

  8. Wow, what a spectacular species of shag that jacket is! Glad to have been of service in the Resistance in the Face of Faux Fur (RFFF)! $300 is (nearly) too much to spend on shoes, and definitely not coat-worthy.

So excited to see you on Friday!

  9. I have a sonic toothbrush - sans timer.
We haven't had TV for 25 years.
I'm wondering if a shaggy coat could be transformed with leftover Fudge Paintbox hair colourant.

  10. That shaggy coat is a triumph, I love what you've done.
I don't miss TV for the month I'm in India but enjoy it at home. Life without Curtise & I's drunken Saturday night text fest during The Voice & X Factor would be very dull indeed. Mind you we've only got Freeview so other than our BBC licence it's cheap. xxx

  11. I have a obsessive relationship with my electric toothbrush. I make sure I get in those two minutes twice a day and sometimes, like you, I let it go on longer than it should. I have no smiley faces...just extra clean teeth. And a bit of OCD.

I would have loved to have seen that coat you were obsessing over! Although you new furry one with the added colour is now a Melanie Haute Couture piece.

    bisous

  12. Forgot to mention...we gave up our cable almost 3 years ago now...instead we watch it all on the computer (which yes, is hooked up to our TV). All for free. Oh yeah. We're badass.

  13. With my coffee habit, an electric toothbrush is a must for keeping my teeth from turning the color of dirt. :-) Love what you did with the jacket!

  14. Such a pretty jacket. I just want to jump into your closet and swim few laps. I have a love affair with my battery powered face scrubber. If it's not fully charged I have a bit of a melt down. "Oh No.....I can't scrub!" Which reminds me. Did you ever see that "Twilight Zone" episode where the electric appliances attack their owner???? Aaaaaa....!!

  15. Now you've got me all curious to see this $300 coat!! Sheila to the rescue, in the nick of time.

I like the shaggy jacket now that you have Melanized it. You're acquiring a whole shag-tastic wardrobe, aren't you.

I had an electric toothbrush when I was a teenager, but haven't had one since. The vibrations feel weird on my sensitive teeth. I do have a TV and cable, although most of the time I have no idea why, because the only things I watch on it are The Walking Dead and Turner Classic Movies. Now I'm hooked on Netflixx!

  16. love your shaggy jacket, and love that you wear it even if it's not finished at all!, that's working in progress!
No electric toothbrush for me, thanks, I'm an ol'fashioned lady!

  17. That jacket is GREAT! What a delight a sharpie can be, I often doodle on my jeans to cheer them up. I haven't had a television for years and it's great. Once you get over the initial pain of it not being there it become very easy and I find I do so much more. I'm sure in a few days you'll rue the day that you ever had one! Electric toothbrushes freak me out, I hate the feeling. I always think my teeth are going to fall out. Anyway happy brushing! X

  18. That shaggy fur is brilliant! So original! Clever you! Good thing you avoided the expensive vintage!!!x

  19. Oh Mel, is there no end to your inventiveness?? Yet another masterpiece from that feverish creative zone you abide in - permanently it seems. Grrr, love the jacket, it speaks to me, and not in a whisper either.

  20. That furry graffiti-fied jacket is a triumph. You don't need an expensive coat - just fabric paints and a Sharpie!
I don't watch a lot of TV but I enjoy it when I do. Vix has already mentioned our text fests - they add enormous value to televised singing competitions! xxx

  22. You see ?? That HWPV has transformed into a work of art. Its uniqueness will surely be recognised? I think it looks rather wonderful.
As for the toothbrush... I love it too, but I share the base with my husband (we do have our own brush), so I won't be bringing it with me to Vancouver. Saves me from possible embarrasment if it would start roaring in my suitcase at customs haha.

  23. I like Shelley's 'Melanized'. It's catchy!

I was a zealous tooth brusher, but apparently too much brushing is bad for the gums, and I have receding gums. Sigh...too much, too little, how do you get it just right?

LOVE the shaggy jacket. You may have to start naming your coats....they have such personalities.

  24. I share my base as well. We make sacrifices. I'm sure customs would believe you when you say it's a toothbrush...?

  25. I LOVE your upcycled jacket. The wonders of Sharpies! ♥

  28. Shaggy jackets look great on you, and I love your vintage shopping rule! I'm deciding to mostly buy second hand - $5.99 seems to be Goodwill's average price for what I find. Not a lot of vintage, but I don't really check regularly either.

We don't have TV for about 10 years now, don't miss it a bit. No electric tooth brushes either, but lots of computers and computer time. :) Have a good one, Melanie! xxx

  29. I wish I could use a Sharpie and paint like you - that jacket is fabulous. You must have a huge wardrobe for all the amazing shaggy furry jackets :-)
