Slack-jawed in a shaggy coat, and other important things

Wearing this inhuman outfit, I went to the park for photos. There were lots of cats there. And I seem to be walking on water. Handy, because it never stops frickin' raining!!

It's a magic cat with orange/yellow eyes. I'll call him Pyewacket, after actress Kim Novak's Siamese familiar spirit in the '58 movie Bell, Book and Candle, clip here. Ms. Novak plays a cool Manhattan witch who, sadly, becomes a normal, boring person after falling in love with a spineless man played by James Stewart. Sigh.

I looove this outfit. The jacket and vintage humongoid palazzo pants seem to match, and then I wore ruffles and that shaggy vest, newly sprung from its space bag. And the elastic corset belt of course makes any outfit better.
Fierce, right? Or maybe I simply ate too much chocolate.

Below, a different outfit featuring the classic stupefaction pose - you know, where you open your mouth a bit. Who knew that looking slack-jawed would be a thing? Of course this look is not unfamiliar to me; I just rarely do it for a camera.

And I'm wearing white Manic Panic hair gel and white brows created with MAC chromacake. The lipstick, called Poe by Kat Von D, is almost black, but much of it had come off by the time I got home for photos. I belled the bottoms of these pants too.

I learned this mouth pose from ingenue bloggers. It is the cousin of the half-mouth-droop, taught to me by Sue of A Colourful Canvas. And let's not forget the just-pulled-my-finger-outta-my-mouth pose. You can see my big fail here, last photo.

Lately I've seen bloggers rubbing or smooshing their moist lips suggestively with an index finger. Usually they have tousled, just-woke-up long hair too. Well, I think it's unfair that young bloggers get to hog all the "in" poses. It's time we short-haired (or otherwise), middle-aged bloggers moved in on these hot, hot, hot poses.

Note the belled bottoms. The colour on the left is more accurate.

Until such happy day, though, at least I can do the one where you use your index and middle finger to strum your lips and make bub-bub-bub-bub sounds. Sophisticated, I know. Maybe I can make it a thing. Which brings me to the next pose...

It was Black Friday last week. In honour I present: the double-raspberry.

Below is the photo I put on IG. Zip it! Zip it good!

Black Friday - it sounds like a spell. It is a spell. You see a sign in a shop window that says 100% OFF STOREWIDE. You think, WOW, that's a great deal, I'll risk it. You go in. Bam, there's a wall of people windmilling their arms to grab, grab, grab. Hardly unexpected.

But where are the deals? Of course there's fine print: on selected items only.  If you're lucky there's a single cast-off on a rack in the very back for 80% off. Fortunately, I usually prefer these rejects, but it wasn't worth sticking around to find out. I sucked up the crowd buzz and left.

A better view of those pants. Most of my shaggy apparel is out of storage now. In a pinch, I could hide a whole farmyard of animals in those pantlegs.

That's the end of this week's stroll through what I wore. It was US Thanksgiving, and I hope those of you who celebrate had a good one. It's the time to recount our blessings - there are so many.

Have a good week everyone. Here's a link to Santana, Black Magic Woman, live in 1971.

Yes, I think I'll also join Patti at Visible Monday, Not Dead Yet Style, and Catherine, #iwillwearwhatilike, at Not Dressed as Lamb.

  2. love this outfit too! and the one with the green brocade pants - and the raspberry of cause!!!
    totally gorgeous photo art! awesome!
yay - posing. if one want creepy followers for pumping up the stats than posing like the girl from the centerfold is required. and words like latex, leather, high heels and pantyhose in the headline.....know some boring german housewife fashion bloggers who do this regularly to attract followers and advertisers.....
nothing what you need - you are one of the most glamorous persons that i know!! i wish we live in the same hood so some of your sparks fall on me.
much love and huge hugs! xxxxx

    1. I'm happy you like the photo art. It's tricky - I love it but it doesn't mean other people do. We would have tons of fun if we lived in the same neighbourhood. Those wouldn't be sparks - it would be lightning!

  3. That opening image took my breath away. What imagination, style and elegance! Love your shaggy coats too, and you wear them brilliantly!
I can't imagine anyone wanting to go shopping on BF. But they are and they do! I just push buttons on my laptop, that's all. :)

    1. Oh Natalia, I'm thrilled you like the opening image. I don't need validation because I love it enough myself, but I confess the compliment feels good coming from a fellow artist. I wanted to suck up some that manic energy on BF, just a touch. After I got it, I went for a relaxing coffee. Hugs.

  4. Oh god, your posts are better than even the Jon Oliver show, and that is funny enough to faint from. Love with all my heart your shaggy coats and huuuuge trousers. And Kat makes some ferocious lipstick, I must grab this one. xox

    1. Jon Oliver? I LOVE that man!! I think you might like this lipstick, Patti. It's such a very dark, dark purple that it's almost black. I wore it here over my red, but straight or mixed it's really fun.

  5. Love the belled bottomes!!! Luuuuvvvve them. Have always been a fan and your brocade (?) version is a killer. And yes, those poses just crack me up. I hear you sister! Let's move in...Have a great week Melanie. Sabina

    1. Hahaha, you and me, honey - squished lips all the way. Heh. The poor pout post, so outdated, yes. I went through a phase an belled many of my bottoms (!). I hope I don't have a change of heart, or if I do, that I want stovepipe pants.

  6. Your Photoshop skills know no bounds : ) That cat is so sleek. Looks like it has been dipped in hair gel and then slicked back.

That last photo really shows off those massive pants to their full glory. I love the idea of a whole barnyard of animals hidden under there. That'd make a great cartoon.

    bisous

    2. Yes, that cat looks very waxy, doesn't he? Not exactly cuddly. I did do a cartoon once of animals under the Freakish Yellow Skirt. Haha!! It's one of the early posts. Actually, I think it's on the original post somewhere. A dog, a cat and a bird...? I wouldn't want a cow in there. But I could fit a bunch of new kitchen appliances in there. Heh.

    1. The Arizona Desert?! Ooooh, that sounds wonderfully welcome right about now, going on 1,000 days and nights of cold rain here. I see a lawn chair, some fruity drinks with umbrellas and mini outdoor air conditioner if such things exist. I'm so precious it hurts! Thanks for dropping by Dawn.

  8. Beam me up Scottie and drop me bam, right into your closet please! I fancy that your closet may indeed be like the Tardis, brimming with every colour, every texture, every pattern, every material imaginable (and probably many yet to be discovered). Just when I think you've outdone yourself with some outrageous get-up, you deal this hand of wonders. I'm all gushed out now Melanie, but still very genuine none the less x

  9. Mel

You look utterly fabulous in all your outfits and the double raspberry is hilarious! I love the humungous pants, the beautiful green trousers and the lovely tops. You don't look fierce at all - rather sleek and cuddly - it's the fur waistcoat and coat; I always want to stroke fur on people and have to restrain myself...How many fur items do you have? I counted three different ones in this post alone!

Black Friday does indeed sound like a spell - I gave it a miss, too.

    1. I'd have tried a triple raspberry but that would have been grossly X-rated. Hahaha. Sorry if I offend. I am like you, I see a luxurious texture and I want to touch it. I have a couple other things that are shaggy but you've seen most of them already. What am I going to do when winter REALLY gets going?!! Hugs.

  10. So many glorious combinations , hard to choose a favourite but the wide, very wide palazzo pants , floral shirt and fuzzy jacket win out. Keep up the poses , so much better with character than any young thing. Double raspberry always right.

  13. Oh, dear, is the poopoo pout a thing of the past? Or is it just for youngsters who can't afford their own botox? You have way more class than that, and the poses that tell the world, I am woman, hear my jacket roar!

The half mouth droop looks good on you, but on me it's the half jowl droop. I guess if I hold a cat in front of my face it won't matter. Thanks for sharing all the colour and fun links and your fabulous self!

    1. I think the finger-pulled-outta-the-mouth is close to the poopoo pout. Except the mouth is open. I would totally look better with the FPOTM if I had botox, definitely.
And no, no, no - that's the full droop look there. It's a restrained version; I wasn't prepared to unleash my full droop on you yet. I would much rather hold a cat in front of my face though. XOXO Val!

    1. If those cats were in my pants I'd freak out - they look like they're made of wax or cats with hair gel, as Suzanne notes. Heh. GROSS! That's not my full-on droop. Rest assured, we could do some great photos together with the real deal droop. Hahaha!!

  15. The line between blogging and porn just seems to get thinner and thinner with these poses and lip manoeuvres that you have to perform just to be an 'it girl' or a 'fringe it girl' or a 'want to look like I'm not in 'it girl' it girl even though I'm so 'it' it hurts it girl' or whatever it is we want to be. Or are. Those are the most magnificent pant legs I ever did see! Love the raspberry top. Love everything actually! It's all my favourite kind of clothed porn. Xx

    1. You said it!! What's up with that? I'm more like Cousin It from the Addams Family, the shaggy blurping family creature, than an it girl. I'm pretty sure Cousin It is naked but I think he wears a hat...? But that's allowed. Yeah, the pants win for sure.

  16. Oh my gosh. Mel, will you please become my stylist? I just love every little thing that you do. Those bell bottoms!! Better than the sixties. I'm feeling a bit of a Janis Joplin vibe. And that bell book and candle movie pissed me off, too. I say, we should embrace our witchiness. In fact, I am casting a spell on all the Trump voters right now.

    1. Come over, Connie, and we'll play dress up. Oh, how I love Joplin. And James Stewart in that movie? Pffft. Her shop got all pink?!! WTF? There's a path along the waterfront here and almost every time I walked along it at dusk a street light above me would burn out. I loooved that!! I always thought of that movie and felt comforted. I'm hoping counting will do the trick!

  18. Darling, this is how I know and love you: standing out in the crowd, mixing and matching prints. You are right the jacket and the pants seem to go together. For me the burgundy shaggy coat would be good. And is that top with the polka dots by Bob Mackie? Could be.
Your sticking out tongue pictures made me laugh.
    Keep up the good work.

    1. The top looks like it could be a Bob Mackie but it's a vintage top made in Hong Kong with something British added on there. It's a knit of some kind, zips at the neck. The collar is padded a bit like a space suit. I love it but it's getting delicate. Like me. Hahaha!! You would look fantastic in the burgundy coat. It swishes divinely. Hugs, Greetje.

  19. there's an article circulating down here in the states entitled "A Yale history professor’s powerful, 20-point guide to defending democracy under a Trump presidency" and #7 is STAND OUT: "Someone has to. It is easy, in words and deeds, to follow along. It can feel strange to do or say something different. But without that unease, there is no freedom. And the moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow." I think you got that one covered. I'm taking notes. (Laylage from IG)

  22. I'm mesmerized by that first photograph. Great editing! I'm clueless when it comes to photo editing, so I just avoid it, but I might try to paint over some photos some day if I figure out a proper way to do it. The scenery on that first photo makes me think of Asian princesses for some reason...and the cat is precious. I'm sorry I forgot its name already, but at least I remember the orange eyes- I only remember that name sounds hard to pronounce, perhaps that tampered my memory:)

Anyway, those palazzo pants are to die for!!!! I thought they came together with the jacket but after watching carefully I see that the pattern isn't exactly the same, which makes it even more cool- if you ask me.

I love both of your bell bottoms too! I'm very keen on bell bottoms and flares and it is great to see you rock yours.

I don't know if you actually did eat loads of choccies but that pose is DEFINITELY fierce.

There's another thing I want to say: I absolutely adore your writing, and you always keep me entertained, from start of the post all the way till the end.

Your zipper shirt made laugh out loud, and your descriptions of various facial expressions bloggers prefer made me try them all in the mirror.
You just bring such delight Melanie. That little funky park world you created is where waxed kitty's go to melt down to normal.

Yeah, what was up with Kim Novak losing her moxy when she hooked up with the boring Jimmy Stewart character in Bell, Book and Candle. Pyewacket is the best kitty name. Another message sent to women to soften up, calm down, and give up what makes you special so you can get a man. Pffffft.
