Floral vintage jumpsuit with microscope

Don't you hate it when you go into one of your favourite cafés and you can't find an outlet for your microscope? Right? I hate that.

Who said only laptops and cellphones and tablets can go for walkies and coffee? Really, how tiresome.

Bye-bye woman-with-coffee-and-laptop selfie; hello woman-in-awesome-vintage-'70s-jumpsuit-with-palazzo-pantlegs-with-coffee-and-microscope selfie! I think the security guard understood what I was doing.

What would the world be like if scientists suddenly starting taking over cafés with scientific gear, setting up mini research institutes each afternoon with free outlets and caffeine on call.

I suppose occasional shouts of "Eureka!" would crack the humming silence as breakthroughs were made in solving world hunger or health and wellness issues. If I were a savvy shop owner, I would create a "Eureka Lunch Special" with a sandwich and your choice of soup or salad.

Clearly, below I am hurtling toward my own Eureka moment.

Ice cream - diet ginger ale - chocolate chip cookies! And a giant pretzel for something salty.

This past month has been a white-knuckle ride that has tested my fortitude and gumption, in a good way. I've come through intact, with a big silly grin even, except I caught a bug on a plane. Cough cough pitui!

As a result, I have been in the wearying daily routine of wearing a face mask. Believe me, this is a bug I don't want to share. I'm almost cured now, but a summer cold? There's a heatwave and I have a friggin' cold?!!! GAAAA! This shoot was my first real solo outing in a week.

I'd like to share details of what I've been up to, but I am contractually bound to secrecy. It's all very cloak and dagger, just the way I like it.

I leave you with the following photo - just another day at the café. Probably nobody uses microscopes like this anymore (I bought this one for O a couple decades ago), but it's my Year of the Prop, and this instrument caught my eye as I was going out the door. My first prop shoots of the year were here and here

A tricky tripod shoot in a café - I had to snap and scram.
Can you see my tripod?

While I'm at it, I propose a caffeinated toast to women of science. You blaze trails and inspire. Thank you. I hope you have better gear than I do. And I suspect that a lot of it is in your laptops. Hahaha!

I shall link up with Patti at Not Dead Yet Style and her Visible Monday and Catherine at Not Dressed as Lamb and her #iwillwearwhatilike - if I can still remember my way there. Heh.

Stay fabulous, everyone. All will be revealed in the weeks to come.

  1. ooo, ooo, what shall she reveal? Are you microscoping the bug you caught? Can you bring foreign bugs into Canada? Maybe it was okay being a domestic flight... You look seriously smashing at the cafe in your kicking ensemble, mask and scope. Did they clear the place for you?

    1. This photo would look like the final scenes of the movie Scarface if I had actually cornered that bug. Knowing what's good for it, I think it's on the lam, kinda. Maybe. I hope. By chance there were just a couple people in the cafe went I visited. Whew!

  2. The caffeinated women of science - the CWS! I'd love to be in that club. So glad you're able to get out and create a vision of science and loveliness at the coffee shop. A summer cold is just wrong. Can't wait till you unspool all the secrets, xox

    1. Yes, Patti, you can join that club. And yes, a summer cold is a hideous pseudo-oxymoron. It's a countdown to my unraveling - that didn't come out quite the way I intended. Heh. xox

  3. You are my hero! Going out with a face mask AND a tripod and setting up in a public coffee shop. You are fearless woman! Send me some of your boldness.

So glad you are starting to feel better. You certainly look great.

BTW...just as I predicted, you do a very good scientist/pharmacist/doctor, even in a vintage palazzo jumpsuit : P

    1. Perhaps I'm fearless because I'm delirious. Heh. It was a good shoot, although I think I pushed too hard - I was excited to be outside my home. About the pharmacist/science/doc look, I in fact remembered you saying that just after I posted these photos. xo

  5. EUREKA! I think you may be on to something. The lighting, the palazzo jumpsuit, the props! Your photos are each one a work of art! Science-y art! Also, I wished I looked so good when I was sick! Maybe it's the jumpsuit?

    1. Science-y art, woo hoo. There was no fever, just a wicked cough, which still required the mask. But the jumpsuit definitely has some magical healing powers. Thanks, Sherry. The light was good in the shop but I still had to boost the levels with indoor photos. xo

  6. Keep up the brilliant research!!!! I can't wait to hear everything you discover and share :) My dad was a chemist and I have one of his old microscopes! I hope you feel better asap!

    1. That's cool that your dad was a chemist and you have an old microscope. I love those things. We never use this one, but it looks good. I shall valiantly keep at the research. Thanks for your well-wishes. xo

  7. I have one of those mugs too! It's on my desk at work - no microscope, sadly. Good luck on the Top Secret Project (TSP) and I hope that bug has been thoroughly squashed. Looking fabulous, but as a TSP scientist, I'm sure you'd rather be complimented on your huge brain.

PS - your brain is showing.

    1. Okay, we have the same LC shoes, the same accordion-pleated skirt, the same mug. Mind meld. The bug is on the lam but keeps nipping back to finish packing. So glad my brain is showing! Hahaha. xo

    1. I profess I'm not a scientist but my respect for them is immeasurable!!! Especially women scientists. And I'm definitely on the road to recovery. Thank you, Nancy.

  9. Great ode to women of science! I respect them a lot and I wish they were given more coverage.

You look sensational in this floral jumpsuit...vintage finds are the best, aren't they?

    1. Vintage, can't beat it, I agree.

And women of science, I also wish they were given more coverage. I'm so grateful for their work.

  11. Oh that pants suit!!! It's the perfect thing to wear while researching and subsequently discovering the cure of the summer cold. Which is bound to be some extract of coffee beans.

    1. Even better than a pantsuit - it's a jumpsuit! Bwahaha! Yes, perfect for all kinds of discoveries. I wish I knew the cure!

  12. First comment on your blog, which I found through Suzanne, Sheila, Etc. I'm Ann and I'm from a boring little country called Belgium! I'd much rather go to a café full of experimenting scientists shouting Eureka than one full of people staring at their smartphones. No outlet for your microscope, that's quite abominable! Love the groovy jumpsuit, and you're looking fabulous, even in a heatwave, with a cold! xxx

    1. Hi, Ann. I love Belgium, if only because that's the home of Mr. Poirot. Heh. Wouldn't such a cafe be interesting? I imagine it would be a cross between a bingo hall and a cafe. Every eureka would be met with balloons and streamers. Thanks for visiting and commenting. I love Suzanne and Sheila and the rest of the gang.

  14. You probably discovered the cure for the "common coffee shoppe blues" without even intending it! Your creative genius is simply heartwarming Melanie. I'm sorry you got sick. To our benefit, it didn't keep you down! Love, Jude

    1. Yes, you may be right about the cure for the coffee shop blues. I'm sure there's a song in that. Jude, you cheer me. Thank you. This last stretch of a cold is maybe the hardest. Blech. xo

  15. Love that jumpsuit, Mel. I remember so clearly trying to use a binocular microscope for the first time in university. How difficult it was to use both eyes. I tried to sneak closing one eye for a while until the teaching assistant yelled at me. Ha. Guess that's one reason I veered away from science and into an English degree. No fortitude in the lab!

    1. I tried science but it didn't stick. I wish I had tried harder. O has a binocular microscope for his work, quite a high-tech thing - very cool. I've finally learned how to see with it. This one mostly sits on a shelf. Sigh. Your former students are very lucky that you went into English.

  17. I hope that frickin' cold has been banished and you are feeling perky. If anyone asked you about the microscope in the cafe, you could say you are working on a cure for the common cold and everyone would either applaud, or stay far away ;)

Whenever I see a fab print jumpsuit with wide legs I always think of you.

    1. Rassin' frassin' frickin' frackin' cold is right. Almost banished. When I wasn't taking photos I was wearing my face mask. It's funny, I wear the mask to protect other people and I think they stay away because they're scared. At the same time, someone could be coughing their head off and they don't blink an eye. The world has no logic.

I'm so happy to be associated with wide legs!! xox
