Yellow Skirt Freak Show Update!! And bumping up your glam factor

If you find me doing DIY lipo, licking a champagne bottle, and eating buttons off my pyjamas thinking they're pills, I've been worshipping again at the altar of lifestyle gurus Patsy and Edina of Ab Fab. (read about them here)

I went to see their new movie, "Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie," two nights ago, which was very timely considering how lately I've been contemplating measures to glam up my life.

This is what I wore to the movie. I also had on my vintage gigantor red and mustard paisley palazzo pants.

Still from the movie review video. Barbara shot this part. Thanks, Barbara!

But more about the movie later...

Project Glamourization. Last week I read a magazine article about a woman who had a very long, impressive name and an expensive villa in Florence, disguised to look rustic. Hey, I thought, that could be me if I changed my name to (drum roll, please):

Melanie von Harumph de Schnackenloafer del Petunia

In the article, they wrote the full family name every single time. Well, I think that's a bit much - I'd definitely let them shorten my name to, say, HRH Mel after the first ten mentions at full length. Oooh, I feel more successful already.

Below, the seersuckiest seersucker you ever did see. Vintage. Home-sewn. With pockets. I wore this last week. Glam? Yes, I think so!

And my sky-high Steve Madden sandals go perfectly.

But I suspect it's not just the name. One needs to glamourize one's life in general. For example, why inhale air, which is so utterly boring, when you can sniff it? Also, now I drink my water from a cute little shot glass. I down several shots in the morning like a big-time bad-ass.

Shot glasses make hydration glamourous.
Write that down!

But I'm afraid nothing I do can live up to the standards set by Patsy and Edina.

However, before I tell you more about Ab Fab, I have some breaking news!! Well, not so breaking now because I've been slacking on the blogger front, but -

Nearly breaking news!!!
The Freakish Yellow Skirt is back in ACTION, high-impact action, with Trina of Tea Time with Trina!

I'm thrilled that Trina has joined the Yellow Skirt show. I was fortunate to meet her last summer and know that she must have packed a humongous helping of positive energy in FYS. Thank you, Trina, for joining and adding your magic to this curious garment.

Now I'll tell you about Ab Fab...

Vancouver Barbara and I attended the Absolutely Fabulous movie together. We ended up in the bar at the Sylvia Hotel afterwards - how surprising!

I made a little movie review video with Barbara. I hope you like it.

MOVIE REVIEW
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE
Special Guest: Vancouver Barbara (who also helped with filming)

I ran into lots of cool women at the theatre. In particular I was happy to see Frances of Materfamilias Writes seated near me. Her take on the movie is HERE. It turns out we are neighbours! Hurrah!

Frances was wearing a spectacular outfit featuring the silkiest oyster grey skirt with two daring slits right up the front which showed off her fantastic gams. Definitely NOT a wardrobe malfunction! She proved that you don't have to dress outrageously to be fabulous. She wore her new blue specs too. They look fantastic. (I also put this photo on my street style blog, here.)

Also there was Denice, whom I met at that swanky event when Shelley was in town, accompanied by two of her very stylish friends, Roxana and April (I hope I got their names right). And Colleen of the blog Clothes Line Finds, and Lynn and Diana, both of whom I know from My Sister's Closet. Colleen and Lynn are in the final scene in the video.

Below: Lynn, Colleen, and Barbara before the show. They look incredible! It's hard to see here but Lynn's sandals are paved with rhinestones. Barbara made that outfit - spectacular! And Colleen scored the glittery shawl from My Sister's Closet.

Finally, a BIG THANK YOU to Lynne Spreen, Any Shiny Thing - Life After 50 for mentioning Bag and a Beret in her post "Grief about Turning 50," here, as a source of style ideas over 50.

And, someone else has linked to this blog but I don't know who you are or where you come from but Thank you!! (unless you are sending people to ridicule me - you never know, right?)

And to finish off this rambling post, one more shot of my seersucker. Mmm. I used to detest seersucker; now it is precious to me. Heh. That's a good view of my shoes.

Did you make it to the end? This is what happens when I miss posting for a week. Everything piles up. I hope you are all well. I have been on a blogger break and getting lots of farking done. Feels so good.

Stay cool, whether it's summer or winter. But I don't have to tell you that, do I?

Are you Ab Fab fans? I thought I would hate that movie because there were so many celebrity cameos in it, which I've found usually means the script sucks. How happy I was to be WRONG!!! Jennifer Saunders is a brilliant comedic writer. Lots of laughs. It turns out there was a character with a huuuge long name, which just proves my theory!

Oh, and because of Suzanne's comment I'm wondering what your long glamour names would be.

I'll link this up with stuff but, really, I can't think about that now. I'll add it later.

Yours Sincerely,
Ms. von Harumph de Schnackenloafer del Petunia

Edit: Okay, I'm back, ready to do some linking.

  1. I'm SO enjoying the videos. It's great to see you "in action" Mel. You are as full of creative, animated energy as I thought you might be. You have a cut naughtiness.
I also loved your (and Barbara's) thumbs up on the film and greatly appreciated the hearing the viewpoints of the film critic u-tube bit. I wonder if I'll "get" the film but then I'm so depressed about Trump and the Republican Convention here in the US that any laugh would be welcomed!

    1. I didn't think I'd like this movie and I was ecstatic that I did. I laughed from beginning to end - even if a scene wasn't funny - because I needed it. If you don't know the series, check out what Frances wrote on her blog. But it's better if you know. There are episodes on YouTube. The characters Patsy and Edina are outrageous. Make sure you dress up if you go. Heh.

      Thanks for your comments always.

My heart goes out to you about the convention. I don't understand the world. Big hug.

  2. Thanks for the reviews, and all the eye candy, HRH Mel. I think those long names are so posh, let's all get one. xox

The video review was fun too!

Now I must think of my own long name. I'm in desperate need of some glamourization.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the movie; I haven't seen it yet but I love the TV series and Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley.

You don't need anything to glam up your life, Mel, you are glam enough already. Some are born glamorous and you are one of them!

  8. Love it. I made a waistcoat thingy a bit like yours to wear as Edina. We are STYLE TWINS I tell ya. Can't wait to see it on 10 August when it opens here and we're doing a drag performance to Paloma Faith. Funnily enough all the other queens in the act were born around the time Ab Fab came onto TV. Sobering!

    Will there be a franchise?
Will there be a masterclass lead by Melanie von Harumph de Schnackenloafer del Petunia?
Will we ever find out how high a thumb will go?

I don’t think I’ll ever be Glam - but I do aspire to be fab and treat my boxset as a life guide. What Would Patsy Do? is one of life’s more exciting questions. Also, I need her hair-do.

Your screening outfit is totally fashion-guru - and your squad is phenomenal.

I’m totally stealing the shot glass idea - I’ve perfected the art of telling people “it isn’t sparkling water - it’s vodka” as I down a tumbler-full - so I can be all “chin-chin it’s gin” with the shot glass. Subversive non-alcoholic drinking has never been so fabulous.

Seersuckiest seersucker is also fab - would you describe that as a Madras check/plaid? The colours are beautiful and it looks rather elegant. Also a dress with pockets love xx. Also, also the swoony shoes love xx

    1. Dear Lady Bracknelling-Monkeypaints von Witherington Stares (heh),

You have given me renewed hope for acquiring funds for construction of my new villa at the North Pole, with a Harumphering franchise. I would be delighted if you would be my first franchisee.

Why, yes, now you mention it, I do believe it is Madras cloth.

I in fact DO drink water from a shot glass. It is subversively fabulous as you say. Chin-chin, hahaha.

Thank you for your lovely missive. I shall cherish it.

  12. What a wonderful Edina-esque ensemble. How perfect. I just got back from seeing the film. Nobody dressed up around here. In fact, the line at the box office looked like a yoga convention. Except for me in my home-made prairie dress. It scares me how much I remind myself of Bubble. Meanwhile, your royal seersuckeriness, I am in love with your dress. It is divine. I am completely serious. When you are tired of it, though I can't imagine how that could possibly ever happen, but if it ever does, I will gladly pay you in real Canadian coins for it.

    1. Hurrah for your home-made prairie dress!! Superbly done! Bubble is my style dominatrix. Why isn't anyone else dressing up? If you tell them it's St. Patrick's Day, they'll happily slosh beer down their fronts and paint their faces green...

If the day comes that Seersucker and I part ways, I shall definitely send her to you.

I love it when you visit!

  14. I love seersucker, always have. I love Ab Fab and Ron and I are going to see the movie. I love that you had so much fun and met likeminded friends. I cannot play the video at the moment as it is too early in the morning (6.15) and I would wake up Ron. I honestly thought I got out of bed at 6 but it appeared I got up at 5. Must have done something to the alarm clock. Anyway, I will drag my sleepy head to the make-up table now and away I go for another weeks work. Blah.
You look very glamourous in your seersucker dress with the cool shoes.

I hope you and Ron have a great time. I hope Ron dresses too. There are quite a few stylish men in the movie as well. You'll see...

    2. Those days when Ron was a smart dresser (he honestly was) are over I am afraid. Now he has a big belly which I hate and clothes just don't look that good on him. It is the one and only flaw but one that really makes me sad. Oh well. I have to live with it.

Trina has really thrown down the gauntlet with her multi styling acheivement of the wonderful yellow travelling skirt - will have to get my thinking cap on now! Your Steve Madden sandals are divine and yes, of course, I was salivating over them somewhat, sorry. Seersucker was the fabric of my childhood when my mother used to make matching dresses in different colours for my sisters and I. Yours is much more elegant though. Have a great week x
