Glamour in the loading bay

That's not wind blowing my hair, or an industrial fan, or a legion of menials flapping from the wings; that's just my hair, which in fact resists air-blown defilement of any sort. Dorkish pose due to skirt-spinning action.
Bag and a Beret goofs off big time with preying mantis
This is as glamourous as it gets in the loading bay when I'm wearing my scribbled-on thrifted runners, DIY T shirt that says "I am my own brand," and DIY mantis pendant. That's just the empty camera case around my neck to give you the Flava Flav of the look.*

Also featured are my oversized, hip-slung thrifted skirt, thrifted tattoo-ish blue shirt, Reebok sweat socks, magic loupe, vintage mechanical wristwatch, and vintage earrings bought new in 1980.

The reflected light from the sharpish sunshine off frame is great for these shadow shots. I'm still hard at work but slipped out briefly for coffee and to grab this snap - I couldn't miss Patti's last linkup before her break, VISIBLE MONDAY at NOT DEAD YET STYLE. She is a stellar host and I need to be there for the group toast.

*In reference to my previous post, I didn't even know who Flava Flav was except by an oblique reference in one of my all-time favourite movies, Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog. So what's going on? First I dress like the Biebs(!?) and then like Flava Flav. What does THIS MEAN!!?? Who's next?! Well, I'll tell ya...
I've been SpyGirled by Anne
An L.A. FROCK STAR, that's who. I've been SpyGirled by Anne. What a wonderful in-box treat! This stopped my work-addled brain in its tracks. She even included my magic loupe and vintage sunglasses. And look at the clean detail she captured in the pattern. Now THAT's talent! While this outfit is not something I own, what my closet lacks Anne's imagination more than makes up for. Thanks, Anne, the one and only SpyGirl. See you soon in Vancouver! Yeeeah baby.

Must run! Will catch up later this week.

  1. Oh being SpyGirled!! That is the best. Such a nice portrait again. Indeed well captured. One talent "doing" the other. As for your hair, it cannot go wrong, whichever way it wants to go.

  4. Looking as unique as always! What a great illustration, to capture all that pattern on the dress, that's awesome!

  5. I love Anne's catwalk blogger illustrations! I don't know what computer program she uses to do the patterns but they always look perfect.

Excellent outfit, from the tips of your puffed up hair to the toes of your scribbled upon runners. I didn't get the Flava Flav reference in the previous post either ;)

  8. You didn't know the genius that is Flava Flav? LOL He recently said that he watches Game of Thrones so he can learn about history! The guy is brilliant I tell you.

Your hair is looking wild and rebellious lately. I love it. That skirt is gorgeous, but it is all your little artistic details that make the outfit uniquely "Melanie".

    Anne is so talented.

  9. You don't know Flavor Flav but knew that Justin Beiber wore oneness? Something's wrong here. Are you a vloset teenager?!
Loving the wild hair and the ladylike skirt, a crazy ass combo. xxx

  11. I dig the hair! And lovin' the new SpyGirl sketch!

  12. I like it, Melanie! I bought a somewhat similar skirt at Goodwill recently and was wondering how to style it... here are some awesome ideas! :) You created a great energy here between the flowy skirt, earrings, keds, camera and your fun hair. Sorry, I don't get the pop culture references, I guess I'm just completely out of it. The only name I recognize is Justin Bieber because my daughter used to like his songs when she was 8 or 9. :) Anne's sketches are great, love this one!

I hope your workload is fun to do and rewarding for you, Melanie! Hugs! xxxxx

  15. Oh, all pop cultural references are welcome here - from teen-y Bieber to bad boy Flavor Flav! Who next indeed?!
Loving the hair, the sunglasses and the relaxed vibe. And Anne's sketches are always brilliant. xxx

  16. I love your hair, too - mine got chopped - you know the "just take a little off" and next thing you know I look like a old lady. Sigh. Anyway, what kind of 'product' do you use?

And I always get confused when you write about 'magic loupe' because 'magic loop' is a way of knitting socks, so I always look down at your feet. :D

  21. Ohhhh...you look like you floated down from the rafters. Elegant like a fashion fairy. Isn't Anne just the best?! And now she's adding to your wardrobe. It doesn't get much better.

  22. Your t-shirt is the BEST!! I like your loading bay glamour and your hair just doing it's own thing!!

  23. LOVE your hair. I should try it with my own hair sometime. Or at least get dressed ;P

  24. Your hair inspires me. But then everything about you does that!

How did it happen that something that was bought new in 1980 is now vintage? By now I've lived through so many eras that almost everything is vintage. Including me.

So fun to see you SpyGirled. A perfect capture.

  25. Ann is awesome and you are awesome and in a moment I will skee-daddle over to Ann's blog to tell her I think so. Now back to your awesomeness. This is one of my favourite outfits and I love the hair! Every loading bay needs a touch of your glamour and all the other loading bays are jealous. xoxox

  26. Congratulations on being SpyGirled! As usual, I am enthralled by your skirt, but this time I am all about the glasses. Whoa! Where are THEY from?

  27. Rad. The pieces seem disparate, but they really do work together in harmony. The skirt is wonderful! I love the pleats and the print that looks like it was freshly painted on. :P

  28. 'I am my own brand' I can't express how much I love that, and how blooming marvelous I think you are. Amazing Anne and her art, you are all quite brilliant. x x x

  29. This is a charming, relaxed look for you!! Your hair is a little longer and a bit louche, utterly gorgeous. I love the color of the shirt underneath as it picks up your eyes and compliments your hair. The wavy skirt is charming and the sneakers are perfect in their "I'm an artist, so there!!" attitude.

But ya know?...In my eyes, you can do no wrong, ever. Every single outfit of yours that I've ever seen has your stamp of authenticity (a slightly hackneyed word these days but still useable) and has integritty...yup, that's how you spell it.

    Love you!!!
