Floral pants to summon summer

When a man passing me on the sidewalk said, "Wild pants!" I should have said, "Yeah, baby, they match my wild heart," and winked. Instead I shyly laughed, "Yeah." When another guy yelled, "Great pants!" I SHOULD have shot my imaginary finger pistol and twirled it around before reholstering it with a grin and a wink and a couple of clucks like the sound you use for horses to giddy-up. Instead I quietly said, "Oh, thanks." Why, oh why, do these saucy come-backs materialize AFTER the fact?

I thrifted these gems (pants) the day I was coming home from taking photos at orchestra rehearsal in late April. I was still recovering from my cold at the time and I thought they would be good medicine. Indeed. The saleswoman in the shop assured me that they were REAL Versace - but it wasn't until she raised the point that I questioned their authenticity. Frankly, I didn't care who made them - I was in love.

This fantastic Cirque du Soleil tank has all the colours in it and my satin blouse provides a perfect neon pink ground. I tried to look like a punk in some of my photos but my expressions looked angry and bewildered. My friend also gave me a little sample jar of Product for my hair the other day which helped me achieve this case of bed head. It's an amazing substance, powder blue and stringy like candy. Instead of my hair feeling like soft grass blowing in the wind, my hair felt like gyrating stalks of broccoli.

Details of the outfit
  • floral pants by Versace (or not), $29, a new thrift shop, forget the name
  • Cirque du Soleil tank, hand-me-over
  • pink satin blouse by Jacqueline Conoir, Wildlife Thrift Store
  • crackle brown Miu Miu boots, Wildlife Thrift Store

My main inspiration for buying these pants came from Debbi over at She Accessorizes Well. I had seen her in floral pants a while ago and they were great! I'd never worn floral pants before, so when I saw these I thought of her and bought them. Thanks, Debbi!

I am wearing this visible outfit over to Patti's Visible Monday at Not Dead Yet Style. See you all there.

  3. After seeing your photo I just want to get a pair of bright pants but I don't think I would look anywhere as good as you do. How cool to have comments from strangers - I think you look awesome. If I saw you in the street I would come up and tell you. Hope you are having a great week.

  11. Glorious!! Sexy and fun, fearless and funky. I totally relate to your belated comebacks. I rarely have a witty/ feisty retort until much too late. Who cares. You're still wearing the best pants ever.

  16. I think you should wear the pants until you DO have a quick comeback to the flying compliments! And I laughed out loud at the comment on putting product in your hair--my sentiments exactly.

  17. You are sunshine beaming from my monitor Melanie. I remember that tank top from one of the very first posts I saw on your blog. I love it!
Those are great pants too! When I was in fourth grade it was the first year girls could wear pants to school. Mine were floral high waters.

  19. When I was younger I was never short of replies but now I'm so surprised I do exactly like you. It feels like having been invisible for some time... Anyway, these pants just put smiles on peoples faces and they look great on you, and with the pink blouse on top you look amazing! And thank you for expressing so precisely the feeling of added hair products!

  20. Melani, I have to say this is one of your cutest outfits. Don't be surprised when the big wigs from Vogue magazine come knocking at your door for you to model for them!

  22. I can't believe that is a thrifted treasure outfit. I wish you HAD said something to that man about your wild heart just to hear how he responded. Or maybe it's better you didn't. As usual, you look amazing.

  24. Now that is a bold look!
I know what you mean about retorting to people on the street. Some days I can be quick other times it's like 'durrrrr... yeah, ok, thanks...'. Ha well.

  25. I think the floral pants are some of the best I've seen and I love how you've rolled them up at the bottom with those stunning boots. And that tank! And the' broccoli' hair. Inspiring and spirited!

You've given me the idea to memorize a response, as if a script, should such a compliment occur. Because I always have a shy and quiet response as well. But pulling it off would be another story.

  26. I've never been fond of floral-patterned pants, but it's most likely because I've never seen ones like those, and I love how you've styled them! I am so with you on the "belated comebacks" - I always think of the perfect retort 5 minutes later. The Style Crone has a good idea about memorizing a couple of snappy comebacks that can be used when needed.

  27. Gah! I'm useless at quick and smart replies, I always think of something once I've got home.
Love those trousers on you, your legs go on forever and ever and I'm delighted you're with me on the more is more school of bright and printed dressing. x

  28. There are styls, that can't be copied - no matter whether one has got the same clothes and accessoirs, as you make your choise by by Head & Heart and Inspiration - in reflexion of your own self-confidence an the form of the day. That's the way to be the final touch in personal art. Either one has it or not. - Hats off, Mrs.Non-Robinson - perfect - you've got it. Hope to see more art of this kind here.

  30. Well, you definately got summer goin' on, whatever the weather decides to do! You look great. Personally, I cannot begin to tell you how ludicrous I would look in them (if I could even get them on, that is!)

Those were fabulous come-back one liners. Never mind that they weren't available at the exact time that you needed them. You shared them with us, which is just as good, yes? Plus it kept you from being hassled by unwanted admirers. Presuming they were unwanted.

    Much love from England,

  33. Wow, you did way, way better than me at wearing them. Those are fab pants whether real Versace or not.
As to the responses to the comments. Now you have them figured out for the next time you wear them! I can never think of witty comebacks until later either!

  34. Such a cheering post - from laugh out loud at your musings and observations, to the visual 'zing' of your amazing outfit. I love your description of your hair as 'gyrating stalks of broccoli - I was picturing a sort of Aardman style claymation animation, with broccoli strutting its stuff. But back to the outfit. I'm definitely inspired by you to now get out my rose print trousers - bought and worn by my mum in the 90s, rescued by me from a donation pile and run through the sewing machine to reduce them from kick-flare to drainpipe. And after all that, I've never worn them. I shall unearth them...

  35. I always think of come backs later on! I love the sound of gyrating stalks of broccoli! Oh those trousers are wonderful, you would always feel happy and bright wearing them! xxx

  36. Oh I am the queen of the whispered in my mind "Fabulous come back". One day the words will make it out.
The pants are fantastic!!!!! That's it fantastic!!!!!!

  37. Gyrating broccoli!! LOL, you kill me woman, bloody hilarious. I know what you mena about thiking of the best response after the fact...maybe we'll be quick-witted in the next life, hey?

  38. Damned "esprit de l'escalier" -- the smart comeback is always delayed! Versace or not, those pants are fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh yeah, I'm in the "think of something witty an hour later" camp too...
But still, you don't need quick-on-the-draw responses when you have style and colour and gorgeousness in spades!
I LOVE those trousers! Now as you know I have trouser issues, but you, on the other hand, clearly know how to rock a pair of floral skinnies like there's no tomorrow! Endless legs, bright pink, cool t-shirt, Totally Marvellous Melanie! xxxxx
