But would Shackleton approve?

I popped my nose out of my ice cave for a moment and it froze. I knew I would need to wear my polar-bear camouflage coat today (aka pastel-nicotine faux fur coat) with my skirt hiked above where it should be in shameless fashion.

The uni-suspender I had made for a previous skirt (here) came in handy to prevent slacking down of this one too. In its normal waist position this skirt looks hideous, truly. It's always been a bit too roomy. I like the asymmetry of one side higher than the other. Polar adventurer, yes, but somewhat cavegirl too.
Plus, One must show off  One's New Socks  to maximum advantage. Aren't they FABulous?

These socks feature a stunning geisha motif, sadly hidden by the ankle boots which were necessary for my Antarctic trek. The kanji is about bringing good fortune. Hot, hot pink leggings also provided an extra layer of warmth under the socks. I bought a couple more pairs of socks in bright designs since they were 30% off. Would Ernest Shackleton, polar adventurer, approve?

You've seen all of these pieces before except the NEW SOCKS. Oh, did I tell you I got NEW SOCKS?
I'm off to Patti's Visible Monday. I mustn't stop moving or I shall freeze in place. I'll see all you lovelies over there of course. Have a visible week!

My persnickety toe is cured! For now...

  11. I think Shackleton would realise where he went wrong! Not maybe from a keeping warm angle, but definitely from a looking good one! Nice outfit!

  18. Very cute, so you. That coat is gorgeous.

  19. Yes, when it's all gone a bit arctic outside, you need to hike up your skirt, dig out your pretend polar bear coat, pop on a brace (fashion singular and ACTUAL singular, for once!) and bright leggings, and buy NEW socks! How else should supermodel fashion editors cope with freezing weather?
You look fabulous. Ernest would surely have applauded your efforts! xxxxxxx

  21. Great attempt to keep you warm, Polar bears have a trick or two to teach us and imitate their white fur is one of these!!The mono suspender provides a brilliant solution to create another masterpiece outfit!!
    Love xxxxx

  22. What a fabulous, warm and stylish outfit. Looks wonderfully sexy 60s on you, and those socks are just divine! Clever idea the mono suspender, you might want to patent that before it becomes the next big thing...

  23. NEW SOCKS!? DID YOU GET NEW SOCKS? :)

I love skirts and sit high on the waist. Really the only way to find them now is to shop vintage or make your own. Or hike one up higher on your body!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love this. I have a similar coat but shorter. That skirt is so cute and I am in love with your socks and boots.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Those socks are amazing!! love the outfit!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love your ingenuity, Melanie. And also, is it weird to say that I love your hair--the colour/style? It's very chic. I think I needs me some good luck socks...especially since I've been freezing! Have you been doing more of your fabulous art lately? I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  27. You dress exquisite every day (at least in the pictures), but of all your way of dressing, I think you ARE pop art-look!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh, now I can see the geisha socks do not need summer. They look gorgeous with the red leggins. A geihsa even in cold winter would never loose her mysterious smile, so the socks will help you keep smiling as well.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hope your new and groovy socks did the trick in that arctic weather. Oh, and don't forget your hat!

    ReplyDelete
  30. The new socks are perfection is so many ways! My eye went from hair to toe with appreciation. Who knew that a uni-suspender could produce fascinating results, and that your skirt would be so much more interesting worn 'hiked up.' You Melanie, are brilliant!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wow!! That skirt is amazing. I love what you've done to it. You always look so damn youthful and svelte. Have you seen qui etes vous Polly Maggoo? Love the hot pink tights and boots. Always love that nicotine coat!! Xxx

    ReplyDelete
  32. you inspire me like no other!

    ReplyDelete
  33. NEW SOCKS! YAAAAAAAYYYYY! I'll drink to that! YAAAAAAAYYY! NEW SOCKS!

I mean it. New socks are one of the best things in life when it's cold outside and you are forced, I mean, eager to go on polar adventures. I'm pretty sure Shackle-what's-is-name would approve, and perhaps ogle your super-sexy outfit a bit longer than even polite ogling allows.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Did someone say NEW SOCKS??!! Gorgeous Geisha legwear! There are so many fun aspects to this outfit with your one shoulder suspender and fuzzy-wuzzy coat, and of course, THE SOCKS!! It was 10 degrees here on the weekend and now it's freezing again, so I will be doubling up on the leg layers too.

  35. I love the bigger photos and the always stunning and arty ensemble, my deares friend.

  36. really fabulous socks, love them with that leggings, bright and brilliant color combo!, and love your one-suspender style, so cool and asymmetric!
wish you a warm week, dear lady!
    besos

    ReplyDelete
  37. Laptop in shop forces me to use my phone. Ummm...is your hair blue on top? If so, it is sooooo cool. As is your ensemble. Like you, I adore asymmetry, as in the one suspender hiking up the skirt unevenly, sort of. xxoo

    ReplyDelete
  38. One of so many times when hiking one's skirt up is appropriate, don't you think? All adorable, and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your socks. You'd make it way too hot for Shackleton, dear little white kitty! Details all perfect, including the too-cool-for-school single suspender. Art.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Love the socks and tights and all that! I did a post on tights i think you'll dig, come see if you have time... stay warm!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh yes yes yes I LOVE this skirt all jaunty and independent! The socks are utterly splendid - are they new? Thanks for the good wishes - the fires continue. We are so hot and you are so cold and wouldn't it be lovely to have a little in between? But life is sometimes much more fun with extremes - like your SKIRT!

  42. So clever of you to get new hosiery because that outfit will knock anyone's socks off!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Shackleton would not only approve, you'd have to keep a tight grip on those socks and the uni-suspender to stop him appropriating them. Oh, and I'm with Emalina, I think you need to copyright or patent the uni-suspender - as it's bound to hit the catwalks soon. Just remember, we saw it here first...

  44. Seriously, Melanie... I just want to stare at your outfits for an hour! Every detail is so artfully layered. There is always so much to look at, yet they never wear you -YOU rock the outfit!!! ~Sarah of Sarah Hulbert Style

  45. Hi! I haven't commented in a while, but I HAVE been looking at your posts and you've looked amazing as always. I love this outfit. Sometimes I stop leaving comments for a while because the whole "you look great! I love your shoes! That dress is awesome!" thing starts to feel monotonous even when it's all completely genuine. But you do look great, and I love your boots, and that dress is awesome.

  48. I also went on a Great Expedition - yesterday, after working from home all day, warm and snuggled, I walked across the city to a (great, previously Undiscovered) restaurant to meet a friend. Great wines were Discovered, but what I was lacking was awesome socks and a suspender! I love your outfit, I approve even if Shackleton wouldn't...

  49. I want that polar trip photos! The coat is wonderful, socks I can't see them but I imagine and booties... LUXURY! Always great!

  50. Oh, Melanie . . . Love the socks and I will be delighted to see them again with shoes that show them off a little bit more :) How very nice it would be, to be small enough to purchase from sample sales.
Melanie . . . you are a gem. I love your zest for enjoying life, and thank you for the very sweet compliments that you left on my blog.
I am smiling and you are the reason.
