I think the man cat looks like Karl Lagerfeld. Purely coincidental! I am wearing my pale-nicotine faux fur coat, red beret, denim jeggings, and low-heeled boots. The cool cats are wearing things I WANT to wear, especially that colourful maxi coat.
In the next sketch called Cat's Cradle I am wearing my Steve Madden houndstooth ankle-zip stovepipe pants (did I miss any adjectives?), my Shar-Pei black wool sweater, and indigo wool beret, all thrifted.
I love my pencil crayons. It's a meditative process drawing something and then adding life with that tight scratchy colouring action. I know a lot of you have inspiration boards and Pinterest - I guess this is my way of doing the same thing. Do you colour?
TRAVELLING YELLOW SKIRT FREAK SHOW UPDATE
Helga of Helga von Trollop wears the travelling yellow skirt! If you haven't seen her in it yet, you simply MUST. I didn't think it possible, but this neon yellow is probably the least eye-catching of the pieces she has on. Thanks, Helga, for adding to the love. See her original post of it here.
These are wonderful! The cool Karl cat makes me think of Top Cat, but I really love the Cat's Cradle.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link to the travelling skirt travelogue!
I love your drawings, you have some real talent there! I love creating, painting, glueing, making, breaking- I find it an essential part of balancing out my personality. I had a chance to see Helga rocking the mellow right outta that yellow, it was a beautiful sight!
ReplyDeleteXoxoxo
I love these so much - is there a chance that the dog in the first pic is me?? You are such an amazing artist - I adore that these beautiful works are art in action... real world applications of your inspiration, dreams and a diary all rolled into one. The travelling skirt is in good hands - our Helga is spectacular! Sarah xxx
ReplyDeleteYou are so talented. I love those sketches.
ReplyDeleteI love your sketches, they're so full of life and movement. Cat's cradle is especially wonderful. actually, I love the first one too, damn it. xxx
ReplyDeleteOh, colouring, so deeply satisfying! It helped me survive our unit's Planning Day last month, no joke. "Tight, scratchy colouring action" is a stunningly perfect phrase, and these drawings are fab - just look at you in such fine, furry, embracing company of sartorial splendiferousness! A dreamy coat of many colours will surely find its way.
ReplyDeleteWhat sweet whimsical illustrations. I love them! Have you illustrated any books? These would be perfect. Colouring was one of my all time favourite things to do as a kid. I need to pick it up again.

Happy new year!!I love your illustrations and I'd love to wear everything you and your cat partners are wearing!!I usually paint, but doing drawings and illustrations relax me more, I usually use watercolors pencils or just a bit of gouache.I'm so excited about the yellow skirt, Helga gave us a wonderful interpretation, can't wait to get it in the mail!!

Such whimsy and creativity in those sketches...just like you. And I was just thinking yesterday about the yellow skirt. I was actually going to send you a note asking about its latest adventures. Now I know. Still hoping it makes its way to the Yukon!
ReplyDeleteMelanie! You've discovered my secret talent! I am not a great artist like you, but I have been a Master Colorer ever since I was a little girl. Even at my advanced age I still own the super large box of crayons with the built in sharpener and the entire set of colored pencils and enough markers to fill a Staples! I love yor drawings sooooooo much! Keep 'em comin'!
ReplyDeleteConnie*
YES! I love colored pencils and the things you can do with them so much more than paint. I can't control a paint brush like I can a "stick"...pencil, crayon, pen, whatever.
ReplyDeleteI hope someday I can develop a sketching style that is as interesting as yours. Love em!
Love the whimsy in your kitty sketches. The second one is so magical. I've spent so much of my life cradling kitties, and I now realize that my beloved cat Magic in heaven is now able to cradle me. I do colour, but not nearly enough, and I find it's the scariest thing to share on my blog.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the introduction to the yellow skirt. I would love to don it one fine day too!

Oh Melanie, what fab sketches. I so admire your talent!
ReplyDeleteI just adore your sketches, Melanie, it's great to see that cute Turnip Head accompanied by some animal friends! I want one of my cats to rock my in their paws like that... And the three of you look very cool and mysterious in the first picture!
ReplyDeleteHelga is rocking the travelling skirt, as I knew she would. Looking forward to my turn! xxxxxx
How I love your artwork!!! it's awesome that you feature yourself in thrifted clothes!!
ReplyDeleteIncredible drawings! I need to dig into my art supplies while I've got free time. I've been sewing more than drawing these days. Markers are still my favorite media, but color pencils a close second.
ReplyDeleteOh, Melanie, I LOVE your drawings!!! You are so talented. I do art, as you know. Lots of mixed media, clay dolls, and more. I cannot not make something or paint something! xoxo Lynn
ReplyDeleteI love these posts -- your sketches are just subversive enough, with so much whimsy, and I love the palette. More, please!
ReplyDeleteYou're so talented!
ReplyDeleteYou never fail to delight me with your posts. Happy New Year!!!! Here's to more art, more love, and more fun (at least that's what I'm going for!)
ReplyDeletelove your drawings, and love that you share so fabulously inspiring and whimsical mood!
ReplyDeleteI like to draw some sketches, and love crayons and tempera or watercolors, but I'm not a great artist, just a dilettante enjoying colors!
besos & pencils
How incredibly cute your drawings are! Do I colour? What do they say? Would if I could! Of course I can colour, it's the drawing that's the drawback, so to speak! Hope the year is full of magical things for you!
ReplyDeleteMuch love from England,
Rosemary from www.foreveronthecatwalkoflife.blogspot.com
Happy New Year! Those are wonderful sketches, you're very talented!
ReplyDeleteok, those are the neatest drawings ever! yes, the cat looks like Karl, its the sunnies... how about a Tom Ford cat with you wearing violet and blonde...
ReplyDeletelove love love!
ReplyDeleteHappy new year Melanie!
More looks and styles and dreams in 2013:)
Your drawings are wonderful. Having cat creatures accompanying you in your fashion statements has got to be the best thing going. I never said how much I love the card/drawing you sent. I have it enshrined in my studio. And thanks for the yellow traveling skirt update. It was my first visit to Helgaland. Something I'll never forget and will keep up on a regular basis for sure. You do think it'll hit the States at some point, don't you? No hurry.
ReplyDeletethose drawings are simply magic- What a talent you have Mélanie!
ReplyDeleteAbout your question regarding my last post, yes it's my studio
I wanted to take the pics in the living room as usual but Mr D had visitors so went down there, i was a bit hesitant because of the lense i used but it turned out great so i might go back there for pics, i love my little studio!
Hi friend, I love your drawings! These precious, pants are wonderful and Helga, great skirt! Happy 2013, I hope many beautiful post this year! On my blog there is a Christmas gift!

You not only write pure poetry, you are POETRY, my dear friend.

I loved to draw and colour when I was a kid, but gradually gave them up for more "adult-like" pursuits. I miss both of those activities but can't seem to get back into them. Your drawings are so "you" - my favourite is the Cat's Cradle. I had been waiting to see Helga in the skirt.
ReplyDeleteDamn, I love your drawings! I love my pencil crayons as well. For some reason I haven't used them in ages. The good news is that I have re-discovered drawing in one form on the computer with that crazy Paint program.
ReplyDeleteOh, those strollers - I LOVE THEM!
