Brown-patterned freezie pop with hair in it

Oooh, that red nose, it could guide my friggin' sledge in this -1C weather (just under freezing). Whine, whine, whine, that's all I do...

Of course I had to throw on my growly monster boots with a billion-inch platforms, and a demure wool houndstooth skirt, etc. The freezie pop part of course refers to moi in the cold.

Wearing
  • growly monster boots, thrifted (aka woolly mammoth boots)
  • wool houndstooth skirt with suede waistband and hem trim, thrifted
  • R coat, vintage, thrifted
  • jacquard vest, downsized, shades of whine and brown and the colour of rotting swamp vegetation, hand-it-over
  • chocolate brown turtleneck, thrifted
  • chocolate brown hat weirdness, thrifted
  • magic loupe - gawd, I'm glad of the magic. Thank you, O, who made it for me!
All is not lost - I had hand-cut toast, steamy-hot coffee and a lovely journalling session in my cafe. But then, when I got home, imagine my disgust at discovering clusters of sproingy eyeballs tangled in my boot hair. What a mess! You'd think nobody had ever seen growly boots on a semi+-centenarian before.

You know, I feel good when I wear things I adore; however, usually my photos are a foggy reflection of that inner frisson. Except for rare magical times when the light is golden and the shutter syncs with my inner glint, what comes out of my camera is not the icy perfection I feel. Sigh. And that's okay - I love sharing whatever the media can convey. And there's always my turnip head character to show you the true me.

I'm linking up with Patti's Visible Monday at Not Dead Yet Style. Today I could use a hot toddy. But since Patti is in Florida I'll be sure to bring my swimsuit and sunglasses. Oooh, that would be a treat. Shall we boogie board together perhaps? Excellent thought!

  2. I would probably knock you down for those boots...detritus eyeballs included. You look smashing and I refuse to take your whining seriously...just look in the mirror! You look fabulous!

  4. Love the outfit AND THE wooley mammoth boots. I seem to remember similar ones at the ski slopes back in the day; but they tended to be white. I wonder if these were dyed...xoxo

  7. I just love posts like this where I see part of the picture and then, as I scroll down, I see a big surprise! This is such a fun outfit, even with the colors of whining and rotting swamps. But I worry about you having to take these photos with a timer - you need to be careful running back to your position in those boots!

PS - I guess Seattle got snow. It could be headed your way.

  14. I'm in love with that coat and the wild pattern mixing.

And I'm sorry…but BC has it damn good compared to us in Toronto. Here you wouldn't only be wearing furry boots, you'd have on a furry snowsuit and look like Chewbacca.

  15. I think my eyeballs would be stuck in your boots too, if I saw you out and about. You look all demure and cosy, in a cool pattern-clashy kind of way, on the top third; then BOOM! Mad fuzzy boots below! And no, that's not a euphemism for anything...
I know what you mean about the photos not always demonstrating the Feel Fab Factor of an outfit. Why is that? They should reflect the magic and the inner frisson, shouldn't they? I blame the cameras. Can O make a magic camera, which truly reflects our internal wondrousness, please? I'd pay good money for one of those! xxxxx

  16. You gave me le frisson every time i see your fantastic outfits!
I know what you mean about the magic, there should be a setting on the camera for magic shots, what do you think?

    Take care

  18. Those boots are awesome and only you could pull that off. I can understand why people would pass that at the thrift store. Only a few people can rock those mammoth boots and you definitely are one of them!

  24. A fantastic, opulent mix of patterns and pieces to help you fend off the elements. I particularly love your expression - it's just too damn cold!

Do pop over to mine sometime - I've not been around much but there's a reason for that....

  26. Growly Monster boots and Houndstooth - A Major Squee!
Even with your red nose, you are still my style hero :) My nose looks like that when I'm outside these days, along with watery eyes and fogged over glasses.

  27. The boots are a radiant surprise! As I scrolled down and discovered them I truly laughed out loud in appreciation. Perfect with houndstooth!

  28. Fabulous you, even in frozen venue and spirit. Pretty neat outfit, of course.
What I marvel at the most is your expectations of photographs that reflect your delight ... that it EVER happens is a miracle for most of us, and you construct it so often that it's astonishing. My hat (if I had one) would be off to you, brilliant Mel.

  29. So I'm looking at the outfit and thinking, "Hmmm...this is a little normal for Melanie," and then I scroll down! Wee! I love the woolly mammoth boots! You are the Abominable Bouncing Bumble to go with your red nose. So amazing. You continue to stun me.

  31. Your red nose is so cute. :) You do look cold, though.

I love the boots! Are they vintage? The whole look is great. The boots jazz up up what would otherwise be a pretty classic outfit! Xo

  37. I'm not going to read the other comments yet...!! Don't want all the analysis to spoil my first impression, which is WOWZA. You are deliciously bottom heavy, with the marvelous fuzzy boots, tramping/scuffling along the sidewalks. The upper 2/3rds is swanky and sophisticated with the exception of your expression, which clearly self-deprecating and endearing.

When you return from your walk, a hot toddy does seem to be in order, feet propped up near a wood stove, and a flannel bathrobe might be the ticket. Either way, you will be utterly adorable and fascinating. Must be the magic loupe, too. Love is the best cosmetic and you are beautiful.

  38. You look very stylish!

Thank you. Love love, Andrew. Bye.

  39. Your outfits always make me smile...this one made me gasp with joy and amusement! You are one of the only humans on earth that could carry those awesome boots off! If I wore them, they would eat me, for sure! Love the black and white pattern mixing and the vest, too - especially the description!

  40. the mix of patterns and textures generated instant swoon. I thought the red nose was intentional? Not to worry, spring will come and with it, more wonderful outfits!!

  41. I'd love to see people behind counters after you had left with toast and steaming mug in hand. They don't notice you so much when you approach, they serving you thinking, mmmm, nice houndstooth, rad pattern mixing, this woman seems quite cool. But then. BANG. Boots or craziness. And she walks so well in them. Where the eyeballs in the back of the boots? I think there are a few coffee and toast makers out there doing it by feel now.

  42. Oh you poor Rudolph, such cold is not nice. I like your pattern mixing. And I get what you mean when people stare at what you wear. That is why I moved from The Hague to Amsterdam. In my younger days when I wore a big long red sweater, matching red leggings, white cowboy boots and a white fluffy faux fur coat (get the picture?) sometimes as much as ten people would stare at me in The Hague (government town). So I moved to Amsterdam where nobody stares. And if they do, they are from out of town so they don't matter. You get a lot of remarks though, in Amsterdam. But one is even funnier than the other. I don't mind that at all.

  47. Ooh! I'm a big fan of this one. If I may say, this fur is a lovely color, and I like it better than the Oscar/neon shade of your coat.

I love big strong boots, and you've paired it with such nice lines and proportions on top.
